From Entrepreneurship Class

Some days ago, the entrepreneurship class has just ended (this is the reason why I was hiatus for one week). Honestly, I didn't enjoy that class 100% but at least I could learn some important things. Well, now I know that an entrepreneur is a risk taker. A risk taker that has the willingness to always advance his career.

For your information, United States' economy really depends on his entrepreneurs. Let see how the sum of asset of Apple Computer, Microsoft, and Dell Computer is same as the total asset of company in SGX (singapore exchange). Then about why the China Economy is getting better and better is also contributed by their entrepreneurs. Those were what my lecturer said. For that reason, I think there is no reason for not to work in Indonesia. Money is everywhere in Indonesia. Becoming an entrepreneur is the answer but the question is whether you have willingness to be a risk taker.

The education to be an entrepreneur is one of the solution and at least they can have entrepreneurship minded in their life. But entrepreneurship minded should be balanced with the ethics, of course. Hopefully, there will be more Indonesians entrepreneurs in the future.

Pentecost
The holy day to commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the followers of Jesus as described in the Book of Acts, Chapter 2. Pentecost is also called Whitsun or Whitsunday in the United Kingdom and other English-speaking areas.

One Year Ago, From Diary

Three hours after the earthquake:
Fortunately, I already got up one minute before the earthquake happened. Then, I realized that my house was shaken. It was so frightening and I was thinking that it was because of the volcanic earthquake of Mt. Merapi. The day was going on like usual for me for some hours. At that time, I wanted to have meeting in my school but on the way just 400 meters from my house, a girl stopped my motor cycle and said that there was flood in Prambanan ( 15 km from my house). The was a rumor that the tsunami happened in Jogja. The main road in Klaten was so crowded and all schools were closed directly because of the chaos on that day. The problem was that my sisters were still at school and my mother couldn’t find her in her school. So, the panic happened in my house. The handphone couldn’t be used and we couldn’t call my sisters. Fortunately, their conditions were okay and finally there was tsunami. We were cheated.

Sabtu pagi, 27 Mei 2006
(Jam 1-an pagi)
I prepared my English there.
(Jam 9 pagi)
Wow, it’s strange.
(Jam 8 Malam)
Perhaps, we can conclude that it is a panic day. Tidak tahu siapa yang harus disalahkan. Lagi-lagi kita berbicara tentang kultur masyarakat.

Unfortunately, some of my classmates were the victim of that earthquake. Some of them haven’t built their house properly. One thing that really couldn’t make me sleep is that there were many small earthquakes that disturbed us. Even, one day, there was much information which told that there would be an earthquake in a specific time till all people in my housing complex were gathering outside theirs houses and waited the earthquake happened. I don’t know how they got those predictions. Many of them also slept outside their houses even though nothing happens with their house. They were just scared of the small earthquakes which possibly happened at that time. For me, I couldn’t sleep for three days because I was so afraid. Sometimes, that traumatic event still came to me even though nothing happens actually but for example if there is a little shake, I will definitely stood up and asked what happened. That was what I did here because sometimes I felt the sake because of the bomb near NTU. I mean the bomb that blasts in National Service Area near NTU.

I still remember how the friendship in our class was built and it was clearly seen when we visited our friends’ house and we gave what we cold give, like the daily need, medicine, and other important stuff. But, I hope we can really learn from this. The earthquake is still frightening and I don’t know what to say if that stroke my home and destroyed it. Perhaps, I wouldn’t be in Singapore. Hopefully, I don’t meet this anymore, this was so frightening. But, let it be what it should be. I am sure that God has His own way.

Announcement

Well, can you guess which one I am? I hope you can guess from those picture which my SMA photo or my 6 months ago photo, or my today photo is. Okay, I admit that today I am fatter than last year. Perhaps, I consumed too much fat here and never do exercises.

What I want to announce here is that I will not put my photo again in my "user" profile (changed with that sunset view) and I hope I will not post too many photo in my blog. Secondly, I will then add my next week posts onwards with these themes, but I will not limit my posts into these only, because sometimes I need to share my experience on that day or if I want to commemorate something:

- Christianity
- Business and Economics
- Indonesian Culture
- Inspiring Singapore
- Physics and other Science
- Inspiring Blogger for Us
- Lifestyle, Food, and Book

Hopefully, I can write full time starting from now onwards.
Then, the most important is that I will launch my own website in this address and it will be active from 28 May 2007.

This site is dedicated for Indonesia and I would like to give what I can.

Thanks,
Septian

About Language
I perceive things differently. When I realize how poor my English is, I am totally proud because my country has our own language that doesn’t ask the people to learn the western language, like English or Germany. The country like Switzerland or Singapore may encounter many problems about how they actually unite the people to speak in the same language. Well, making English as the national language for non-European country is somewhat strange finally. There will be many slang in that country and there will be the strange dialect between people which from the different background or group.

I am really proud with my friend from mainland China and we create a good relationship. Sometimes, many misunderstanding evolved in our conversation but I am happy with it. It means sometimes I can laugh together with them. Then, one thing that also makes me proud is that they go away from their country and study in Singapore. It seems how they work hard to get their ambition. Of course this is different with what common people here perceive about them actually, but I really respect them though. One thing that I want to highlight here is about how respecting others from other country is important. This is about how to make this world better in every thing we do and don’t care how small we are. We can!! let’s talk to others.

Apakah arti mencari makna?
Jika makna sudah ada di diri kita?

Haruskah kita berjalan

The First Salary

Suddenly, Students Academic Office sent me an e-mail which stated that they have sent the remittance concerning my part time job salary and that was my first salary that I ever had.. Around the commencement of the semester, I joined a part time job as a student helper in Center for Advanced Numerical Engineering Stimulation or CANES for seven hours. Especially, I helped preparing the URECA presentation for the students. I just used power point and Photoshop to check the students’ posters.

Now, I know that working is so difficult. We should go out from our comfort zone. We should be ready if our boss is disappointed with what we have done and I experienced it already when I worked. I was rather careless when I worked those posters. At that time, I neglected the fonts in the poster. I was thinking that the color blue is all the same. So, I used the different blue color fonts in each poster. It means I changed the standard form of the poster. Then, I brought those back and changed all. It seemed that they were disappointed. Then, they didn’t use me again and I was fired. But, I was happy because I was free of anything. LOL…

Well, I think I could learn something from this. Working in Singapore is so hard and the kiasu (Hokkien, fear to loose) mood surrounds us all. This is like what my friend, Maria, said that the Singapore workers are competitive. They did it so they can get the promotion faster. That was what she said last night on the bus when we went home from Jurong Point to buy some food (and “jalan2” also). Currently she works in OCBC Bank for internship there and she had experienced how competitive the workplace is. For that reason, we should do our best in everything we do. Trying to be as professional as possible is the answer. Doing everything like you do it for God.

I just got 42 bucks for seven hours. But, it stole my time to study too much at that time. Working here seems to be nothing. You can get money easily per hour even you only do something strange like doing powerpoint poster or just waiting as a shop assistant where you only wait a shop (and sometimes doing nothing ). But, the point is professionalism. When the boss remunerates us and he is willing to pay us, it means that he need us to be professional. Earning money here is rather easy but the professionalism and the effort to make our boss happy is rather difficult also. My friend told me that there was someone who could earn $3000 dollar after he spent his holiday here for three months and worked in a company outside campus. That was same as the salary of Indonesian’s teacher for 1 year. But, I think that was different case, the price of food here is expensive so that was enough to live here for some months only. But, I think he could go overseas with those money.

I think that’s all. But, I don’t suggest working in the period of study here. It will disturb much. I experienced it. That was perhaps the reason I didn’t perform well when I worked (difficult to choose the priority).

Ascension Day

Well, honestly, I didn't notice that today is Ascension Day. This morning, I woke up late (9 am, after completing my slides) and I read some messages in my handphone. One of my friend sent me this message :

Yenni said "Sep,U ke gereja ga hr ini? ke BB ato CHC jam berapa"

I replied

Septian said "Ini kan hari kamis Yen"

Yenni wrote "Ini hari Kenaikan Isa Almasih, di Bethany ga dirayain hari ini. Gw mau ikut ke CHC ato BB.

Septian replied "oooo,,,gw lupa kalo Isa Almasih, thanks ngingetin, aku tanyain temen dulu jam berapa kebaktiannya"

After having a accounting presentation today(fortunately, it was okay), I went to GPBB (Presbyterian Church) in Bukit Batok, Singapore. I just knew that in Singapore, this great day wasn't declared as national holiday. Even, many people forget this day, including me. It wasn't like in Indonesia where most of my friends can relax at home till next saturday. Especially it is good for the Indonesian-Christian to concentrate this day to go to church.

Well, I am sure most churches here held a service at night because no one will come if it was held in the morning. For your information, everything here is sometimes held at night, even for national party campaign. Hopefully, Singapore will make this Ascension Day as the national holiday. For the Christians, hopefully, this day can be commemorated anually because this is the day where the relation between God and human is reconciled and God has had the willingness to prepare the place for His believers in this world. For that reason, it isn't fair if Ascension Day is considered as the most neglected day in Singapore, like what my pastor said just now.

Okay, back to sleep, 4 hours sleep only....

Jalan - jalan and Accounting

The accounting equation : Assets = Liabilities + Owner's Equity

I admit that accounting is the hard subject in this special term. How can I finish an almost-1000-page book in one month. It means I will sacrifice many things to study this subject, including my "jalan-jalan" schedule, doing sports, and my hanging out time. But, at least I can learn something from this subject. The expenses should be treated well. Besides, the revenue should be earned wisely. Oh...isn't that too nerd ?

Well, in front of me (after I opened www.visitsingapore.com), there are many events that I should join kalo punya duit. Hopefully, I will get the revenues soon so I can go downtown later with someone I love. Here are the upcoming events :

- Bavarian Radio Chorus, a Music concert,June 3
It is already long time for me not to hear the classical music.
- Chinatown Vesak Festival on May 30
Just wanna see how Vesak Day here
- Singapore Great Sale on 22 May till 25 July
Looking for a new jacket, sandal, hat (wanna have a hair cut)
- Singapore Food Festival on 29 June until 31 July
Someone said, I can eat $200 free food !!!
- International Museum Day on 18 until 27 May
Wanna see how this small country can have museum, too artificial?
- World Book Fair on 25 May until 3 June
Looking for condensed matter physics book, or any physics book

I wonder, will I join all of those events ? too many events...

okay Septian, the accounting tutorial is awaiting you.

Will It Always Last ?

Prejudice and stereotype are two things which will potentially happen when two cultures meet. Those two “hot” thoughts can create many practices on abuses like verbal abuse or even physical abuses. The verbal abuse includes profanity or the usage of bad word to insult another group of people. Stereotypes are ideas held about members of particular groups, based primarily on membership in that group. They may be positive or negative prejudicial, and may be used to justify certain discriminatory behaviours. Some people consider all stereotypes to be negative. In Indonesia, I think that the history of many forms of segregations is caused by these thoughts, especially between native Indonesians and Indonesian Chinese. I still don’t know whether this is a kind of consequence because two cultures meet or because of the lack of communication between two cultures.

Talking about consequence, my neighbor and I discussed about this matter. I insisted that this is really a consequence. I was thinking like that because many evidences show how if a group of people migrate to another region, that group will get the kind of offence. The example is the Jews in Germany in Hitler’s era, or when the great African migration to United States from 1914 to 1950. For the case of Chinese people, what happens in Malaysia is the example. My Malaysian-Chinese friend told me about the reason why they came to Singapore to study here. They said that the discrimination really surrounded them. They said that it was so difficult for them to enter the national university there, like University of Malaya. Then, when I read more about humanitarianism which told about the view that all human beings deserve respect and dignity and should be treated as such, I think discrimination can’t be regarded as a kind of consequence. We are created to be different but the respect of the differences is what the human should really reach when they live in this earth.

Racism is in everyone’s mind, even when we think that somebody doesn’t have a racist mindset, I’m sure that prejudices and stereotypes will always be created automatically in our mind. But, one important thing is our effort to understand others especially how to create mindset that everyone is equal, there isn’t superior or inferior group of people in this world. Seeing how beautiful it is when the differences united us all. Let’s also imagine if everyone can manage the prejudices and stereotypes in their mind. The next question is will racism always last ?

May 1998, Indonesian-Chinese, and Singapore
Chinatown in Singapore

The tragedy in May 1998 is still fresh in every memory of Indonesians. The month of chaos and the month where President Soeharto resigned as a president. The month where many people died, a source told that more than one thousand people died. My friend said to me about this tragedy and some of them said that on May 1998, many of their houses and shops were burned. Some sources told about the rape of the woman but the truth of this story is still debatable. The chaos situation made those crimes easily undetected.

One thing that doesn't make me stop asking is why there should be an offence to Indonesian Chinese at that time. This adds the long history of the existence of Indonesian Chinese in Indonesia. Having read Wikipedia, there was actually a massacre of Chinese people in Batavia in 1740. Then When Suharto came to power, Chinese Indonesians were increasingly discriminated against. With the justification of denouncing Chinese communism, Suharto not only closed communist-leaning parties, but also extended his reach toward all Chinese Indonesian parties and all aspects of Chinese Indonesian socio-culture. Soeharto effectively stripped Chinese Indonesians of power, banning them from politics and the military. He championed forced assimilation policy against Chinese Indonesians so that they would forget their ties to China. This policy brought forth many anti Chinese legislations. Soeharto passed and enacted very discriminatory citizenship laws, such as forcing Chinese Indonesians to re-register themselves as Indonesian citizens by renouncing their alleged Chinese citizenship regardless of the validity of the Indonesian citizenship they may already have. He denounced Chinese cultures and banned Chinese characters and literature. This made them couldn't learn their own languange at that time. My friend told me about this problem and she felt annoyed because she couldn't learn Chinese character. It seemed that she was so angry when she told me about that "sensitive" matter.

Perhaps, Singapore was the safer place for them to run away from that situation. Many businessmans saved their assets to Singapore, bought condos, and created their new life here. This is why many Singaporeans perceived that Indonesians were rich. That paradigm is still on their mind, I think, even though many of them have known the actual condition in Indonesia. The impact is still felt now. Many Indonesians here are mostly Indonesian Chinese. A friend of mine told me how his sister doesn't really want to study in Indonesia and she insisted to go to Singapore. We can't deny that they can't go to governmental position and Indonesia wasn't a hope for them to live in. Many of us stereotype that they are richer. Okay, but let's remember how they struggled on their economy, the strong discrimination till they don't have position in Indonesia. Let's understand this condition and hope there should be a strong understanding each other. But, I still don't know how to built that understanding.

to be continued...

About Textbook ( Buying or Photocopying )

I don't like a long debate actually, but I should adress this issue. When I went back to my home and I saw that they photocopied all textbooks, I was confused why they did it. I know that was a kind of piracy and it was a kind of disobeying the copyright. Now, I am trying to feel what they feel that the price of textbook is so expensive in Indonesia. I think I will do the same thing like them also because of that expensive price. I think this is because there aren't enough good publishers like Prentice, Wiley, or Thomson in Indonesia. This is the different case with Singapore of course. But, I like the solution that those publishers do. They created the edition for International Students and the price is more manageable, I think. I hope there isn't any kind of photocopying books anymore.

Accounting and Accountancy
I take accounting in this special session. Honestly, I don't like the subject with the presentation inside. But, I should take it because business subjects needs many presentations inside. Today, I had my first seminar for this subject. A-three-hour seminar was held in my class but the presentation was great and I like the lecturer. She was so kind and friendly. She really emphasized on how the students understand this subject. When I asked her about whether I was allowed to have a make up quiz on 28 May, she answered kindly that it was okay. When I said that she was so kind, she replied that the most important thing is that the students have knowledge after taking this course.

Accounting and Accountancy

When I browsed in www.answer.com, I found these definitions.

Accounting is The bookkeeping methods involved in making a financial record of business transactions and in the preparation of statements concerning the assets, liabilities, and operating results of a business.

Accountancy is British term referring to the activities and theories comprising accounting including practice, research, and teaching. It includes the guidelines, principles, and procedures accountants are to follow in conducting their tasks.

When I asked my friend about this, he said simply that accountancy is the kind of field of study. Accountancy is like the usage of the words Engineering, Law, Maths and Medicine. But, accounting is the subject of accountancy. This word has the same usage as Calculus, Quality Control, Electromagnetic Wave etc. That simply corrected my wrong assumption.

Taking a business subject is quite tough especially for those who are from science. I dealt with practical things and currently there isn't high mathematics like what I always do. Hopefully, accounting doesn't bother a science student. LOL.

Free Will and God's Will
Suddenly, I am interested in philosophy. Today is about free will and God's will. Having read wikipedia, I think that this matter is really debatable and so tough for me. Many perceptions evolve because of the term Free Will. According to Wikipedia, The principle of free will has religious, ethical, and scientific implications. In religious, free will is also perceived differently in each kind of religion. Interestingly, free will was perceived also in Physics, especially in quantum mechanics. In biology, there is a debate on "nature or nurture".

I myself can't understand the concept of free will. I think this about who actually takes control in our body. Is this all determined ? What is compatibilism ? Even, in biology, the debate whether the behaviour of someone is because of the nature (innate qualities) or because of the nurture (personal experiences).

The theology has a different perspective. In Christian theology, God is described as not only omniscient but omnipotent; a notion which some people, Christians and non-Christians alike, believe implies that not only has God always known what choices individuals will make tomorrow, but has actually determined those choices. That is, they believe, by virtue of his foreknowledge he knows what will influence individual choices, and by virtue of his omnipotence he controls those factors. This becomes especially important for the doctrines relating to salvation and predestination. I just can only say that our body is actually not only ourselves, but God has ownership also in one's body.

Okay, I am dizzy already. Too many perpectives.
Habis pusing dari workshopnya Ko Michael.

Aviva Badminton Championship, Singapore Open
Author, Fendy Limpele, Roomie
Aviva Singapore Open finished yesterday in Singapore Indoor Stadium. The time where the Indonesian NTU students supported the only Indonesian team which was Fendy Limpele and Vita in that hot competition. They finally could beat the team from Thailand easily even though the Thailand team has the better rank and better records of achievement. That was the first time for me to watch the live sport especially badminton. I also never go to Senayan Indoor Stadium to watch any Indonesian Open there. But, watching those matches in Singapore had some advantages. At least the Indonesian students here could have a photo session with them.

A Long Road
After finishing my writing class in Bukit Batok Presbyterian Church which was conducted by Pastor Ayub Yahya, I felt how poor my bahasa Indonesia now. I am afraid in one day I can't speak in Bahasa Indonesia fluently. Currently, I am sure that I have been left behind by the advance of slang words in the youth community. Hopefully, by reading the Indonesian blogs, I will keep on touching with my mother tounge.

MRT will always show how Singaporeans actually be. When we saw the couple of lovers who hug each other (and sometimes kiss each other), or when everyone tends to listen to their iPod, some of them just read, some of them sleep, some read a book or newspaper and many of them didn't talk each other. Mostly shows how this fast pace of life influences their attitude and thinking.

I saw many strange things in the MRT. There was an old man who suddenly got a kind of sickness (it seems like an unconciousness or almost can't walk) and fortunately someone stops the train by pressing a kind of button in that MRT and MRT stops for a while. Another phenomenon that I saw was there was an old woman who talked to herself. I didn't know what happens to her actually. As if she talked to someone. When Pastor Ayub Yahya said that I should write something in MRT, I think I can't do it. I will be dizzy, it seems that I can't do anything in a moving vehicle. It is better for me to see the people aroung. Learning something from them then I will contemplate. Hem...so melancholic.

Thanks God for today.

Tadi makan claypot lagi loh di Banquet, enak ! teringat setahun lalu makan di situ juga untuk pertama kali.

The Last Exam Day
Even though many people hate this exam period, I think this is the memorable period for me. How can I say that ? Exam period is the time where we can aware about the meaning od study. People choose to be nerd for a period of time and to be more "kiasu" ( Hokkien, means afraid to lose). It is more memorable when everyone cares each other, pray each other and also support each other.

There is a funny video from YouTube. This is the hard thing in the exam period, that is the difficulty to get the seats in the library. Sometimes, we should wake up earlier and get the seat before others.
You will regret if you don't watch it.

Daily Note
This noon, I went to canteen 2 to have luch with Chandra. This is like the first time I came to NTU and I met him and he was willing to accompany me to go to the canteen. At that time, I was still afraid to go anywhere. Is everything started and ended with the same thing ? Perhaps, I should always memorize others' kindness to me.

That was the first time for me to swim here. I swam with some friends (Adrian and Chandra) in NIE (National Institute of Education) swimming pool just some blocks near my hall residence. Unfortunately, I didn't bring my swimming glasses. But, the pool was nice. People said that this pool is better than the NTU swimming pool. But, I felt my body is getting fatter. I can't do the free style motion again for a long time. I think, I should practice once a week. In my junior high, it was okay for me to swim 1000 m because I joined a swimming club.

I went to Indonesian Christian Fellowhip service which was about Exam Thanksgiving. Many people said thanks each others and we had a fellowhip together. That was the last day for the final year students. They will graduate already. It is so quick to have a fellowhip with them. At least, I can learn many things from them especially about managing the spirituality in this fast pace country.

This day is great.
Terima kasih.

The Last Decision
From: #SEPTIAN BUDI WALUYAN#
Sent: Thu 5/3/2007 4:19 AM
To: My Prof
Subject: 112

Dear Prof,

Finally the exam is over. Thanks for your help and it works, Sir. I still don't understand why you were willing to help me. Most PAP 112 questions were from tutorial and at least I could write something and -more or less- I know what I write. I know I wasn't perfect in doing that paper. But, your help was meaningful because I could apply what you explained in that paper.

Then, about changing course, I think I will cancel it. Dealing with physics in one year in NTU has made me enjoy in this physics especially after you explain what I didn't understand. And at least, now I believe that physics isn't that diffucult actually if much effort should be put in my process of study. But, even though a bad mark surrounds me in the coming semester ( I will try harder though ), I still insist that I will only do what I like. MAE was just my desperate expression caused by this hard university life.

The next education of physics is always the consideration matter for me in these some days. These all are between applied or pure physics. Actually, I really want to major in pure physics, but I am too afraid to take it because I should still think about my grade, right ? But, I was thinking that applied physics is easier than pure physics. Then, continuing master in Singapore is my consideration, so if I can't reach second upper by taking pure physics, that will be difficult for me to take higher education (with special facility = scholarship ). What do you recommend, Sir ?

Regards,
Septian

Then, he replied.

Dear Septian,

There is nothing to understand. Not everything in life is based on selfish motives. I hope things turn out well for you.

Pure Physics requires strong mathematical foundations, while Applied Physics requires you to think of how physics can be used for technology. Both have their difficult points and both will allow you to go for higher studies. In fact Applied Physics also prepares you to enter into an Engineering PhD, such in microelectronics and lasers. You can just select one first and see how things turn out.

Please see me more often next semester so that we can address the difficulties earlier. I would be happy just to see that you learn how to think physics and use the skills later in life.

Have a good break.

The Last Exam, Fields and Oscillations

There were eight questions in the paper but we were only answered seven questions. It was manageable because I prepared quite well. Thanks God for the exam just now, at least I could write something and I wasn't confused by the questions.

Well, the exam is over but it is really hard to leave my second year. The life seems to be so fast. What my lecturer said was correct that after exam, sometimes you are so sad not because of the performance on the test but you feel as if the life is so fast and our studying time is limited. As if, we don't study anything.

This exam made me love physics deeper. Now, I know how people love physics actually. I was thinking that someone loves physics because he or she doesn't have anything to do. But, now I know how people enjoy physics because of the real enjoyment inside.

It is very late. It's time to sleep.

It is about what I face and the circumstances which I encounter.
About Me

Name: -ian-
Home: Nanyang Crescent, Boon Lay, Singapore
About Me: When everything changes, I wanna still stay there calmly, and wait for the right time. I am surrounded by so called "radical" dreams. I don't know whether it is a form of idealism of a youth. But, be a doctor was my dream, but Physics came into me. ITB was my dream, but He gave NTU for me. Currently, I wanna be a high school teacher, researcher, journalist, writer, businessman, also want to study abroad again. It is unclear but it is fair. As far as I can, because I can jump higher as a true worshiper, as a true believer. Let me be a clay oh God, form me as You want.
